Sun damage, smoking and time are the biggest factors that age our skin. The second layer of skin, the dermis, is where a lot of action takes place in our skin. It contains tiny veins called capillaries that bring blood flow to the skin, there are also sweat glands, hair follicles and nerve endings. There are also collagen and elastin fibers that give strength to and support the skin. It is in this layer of skin where the collagen and elastin fibers begin to break down which leads to wrinkles in the skin. As we age, our skin cannot make the amount of collagen fibers necessary to maintain youthful skin and therefore cannot repair any damage. Skin supplements can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, there are so many out there you’re going to need to try them out to see which one works for you. I am going to highlight one particular supplement in this post. It is new and has only been on the market for about a month. It is from Mary Kay and is called Replenishing Serum + C. This anti-oxidant rich serum is formulated with ingredients that enhance the production of new collagen, and helps existing collagen from breaking down. It contains natural sources of Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) including pomegranate extract, kakadu plum extract and camu camu extract. The body cannot produce Vitamin C on it’s own, nor can it store it, which is why you need a continuous supply. Vitamin C plays a significant role in stimulating the synthesis of skin-firming collagen, which is why extracts of this vitamin are considered beneficial as a skin care ingredient. Exfoliating your skin is a very important step in the skin care routine. Our body’s skin cells renew themselves naturally but as we age this process slows down and the result is an excess of dead skin on our face. This result is a dull, lifeless color to the skin. This is where exfolitaing with Microdermabrasion comes in, the first step is refine. This step feeds and nourishes the skin from below, bringing oxygen to the top of the skin to stimulate circulation, creating a healthy more radiant glow. The second step is replenish. This step feeds and nourishes the skin from above with and exclusive triple-tea complex. After using Microdermabrasion for one week women saw an improvement in skin texture, a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and pores looked smaller. To learn more about this product CLICK HERE

There are a few basic things you must know about your makeup. You should always re-evaluate the skin care products and the foundation you are using each season. You might be more oily in the summer than in the winter and your skin could be a shade darker in the summer due to being out in the sun. Make sure you adjust your skin care and foundation accordingly or you might wind up being unhappy with what you are using. When applying your foundation or color remember to start with a light layer, it’s a lot easier to add more than it is to remove it. Remember to blend, you don’t want visible streaks and edges to be noticeable. If you line your lips, make sure your lip liner is a similar shade to your lipstick. If your lip liner is too dark it will look like you have a ring around your lips. And lastly, have fun with your makeup. Don’t be afraid to try new things, if you don’t like it, wash it off and try another color.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. In the June issue of Applause magazine Dr. Beth Lange talks about sunscreen. Here are some things to consider when looking for a sunscreen.
Sunlight contains damaging UVA/UVB rays. UVB rays are associated with sunburn and UVA rays are associated with causing premature aging, age spots and wrinkles. Both of these rays damage skin and can lead to skin cancer. A physical sunscreen forms a film that scatters the UV light before it penetrates the skin. These sunscreens include zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays before they can cause damage. These contain avobenzone and oxybenzone, which protect against both UVA and UVB rays. A good sunscreen product should contain ingredients that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
When it comes to SPF, for daily use an SPF of 15 to 30 is recommended. Make sure to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas and pay particular attention to the face, ears, hands and arms. Make sure to apply it liberally. One ounce is considered the average amount needed to properly cover the exposed areas of an adult. Don’t forget lips can get sunburned too, make sure you use a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher. Sunscreens should be reapplied regularly at least every two hours after swimming, perspiring heavily or towel drying. Remember sunscreen only works when you put it on. Foundation can help protect the skin from environmental damage and even out skin tone. It gives skin a flawless look and a base for color cosmetics. So which one is right for you? That depends on the kind of finish you want and the type of skin you have. These are some of the basic foundation types that are available.
1. Mineral Powder Foundation – This is best for normal to oily skin. If you have excessively dry skin, you don’t want to use a powder foundation because it will make the dryness of your skin look worse. Mineral powder provides the coverage of a foundation with the comfort of a silky powder. It blends effectively and provides buildable coverage for a flawless look and makes lines, wrinkles and other imperfections seem to disappear. This foundation should be applied with a brush specifically made for mineral powder, it should have soft bristles made out of natural hair so the foundation can be evenly distributed.
2. Liquid Foundation – This is a popular choice for many people, it is suitable for all skin types and it goes on silky smooth and evens out your skin tone. You want to find a formula best suited to your skin type. If your skin is normal to oily, you will want a liquid foundation that will absorb oil for at least eight hours. For dry skin, you’ll want a formula that provides hydration and gives you long lasting even coverage.
3. Creme-To-Powder Foundation – This is not as popular a choice as the other two but is great for people with dry skin. It is a two-in-one product that glides on like a cream and dries to a soft, powdery, matte finish. It provides buildable coverage, and can also be used just as a touch-up or a concealer. If you are using it as a concealer, choose one shade lighter than your foundation. It should also be water resistant and should have an emollient and conditioner to improve the appearance of your skin. This foundation should be applied with a dry sponge.
4. Tinted Moisturizer With Sunscreen - This is a great choice for summer, or if you just can’t be bothered with foundation. This provides three benefits in one product, sheer color , oil-free moisturization and UVA/UVB protection. Add a little bit of bronzing powder and you’re ready for a day at the beach!

Before your makeup can look great, your skin has to look great. Here are five basic steps to help you have great looking skin.
1. Cleanse – The first rule of having great skin, always wash your face at night before going to bed. Your skin has been attacked all day by impurities, it is important to wash those impurities away so your skin can renew itself while you sleep. Make sure you wash your hands before you wash your face to avoid rubbing dirt and bacteria onto your skin. Use warm water to wet your face and gently massage the perfect cleanser for your skin type onto your face in a circular motion. Start at your forehead by the hairline and work your way down your nose, your cheeks, your chin and lastly the neck. Rinse your face thoroughly and pat dry with a towel. Make sure you don’t pull or wipe your skin too hard because this can prematurely age your skin over time.
2. Exfoliate – As your skin ages, it’s renewal process slows down. Dead cells collect on the surface of the skin and don’t turn over as quickly as they once did. Exfoliation gets rid of the skin’s dead cells and reveals a brighter complexion. Use the same circular motion you use when you wash your face only use light pressure. Concentrate on areas where your pores are most noticeable. If your skin is sunburned or irritated, don’t exfoliate.
3. Freshen – Restore your skin’s natural PH balance and refine pores for a fresh face.
4. Moisturize – Moisture creates a barrier between your skin and the elements, it prepares your skin for foundation and hydrates your skin by locking in moisture so make sure you moisturize soon after washing your face. Oily skin needs moisture too, make sure you use one formulated for oily skin. Oily skin can become as dehydrated as dry skin.
5. Protect – It is important to protect your skin from sun and environmental damage. Two things that will quickly age your skin is smoking and sun damage. When you are applying sunscreen make sure you pay attention to your hairline, ears and the back of your neck if they are going to be exposed. these places are often overlooked.
